Extracellular Matrix Control of Endothelial Cell Function and Fate

In this talk, Dr. Huang will discuss the role that nano-scale geometric patterning and chemical composition of extracellular matrix proteins have in modulating endothelial differentiation, endothelial function, and angiogenic capacity. In one example, by interrogating the simultaneous factors of disturbed flow and nano-scale topographical patterning on endothelial cell organization and function, Dr. Huang reveals the unexpected finding of ECM nanotopography as the dominating biophysical factor. In another example, to develop a more physiologically relevant endothelial ECM milieu, Dr. Huang will describe the generation of combinatorial ECM microarrays and reveal the role of specific combinatorial ECMs in modulating endothelial cell survival and angiogenic function in ischemia-mimetic environments. These examples will be discussed in the context of translational applications of vascular grafting and stem cell therapy for treatment of peripheral arterial disease.
