The Opto-Electronic Physics Which Just Broke the Efficiencey Record in Solar Cells

Colloquium | September 17 | 4:15-5:30 p.m. | LeConte Hall, Room #1

Eli Yablonovitch, Professor of Physical Electronics and Director of the NSF Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Sience, UC Berkeley

Department of Physics

Solar Cells are an enjoyable playground for Statistical Physics. We are finally approaching the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit for single junction solar cell ~33.5% efficiency under the standard solar spectrum. Previously, the record had been stuck at 25.1%, during 1990-2007.

Optimal Mass Configurations for Lensing High-Redshift Galaxies (and how to find them in the SDSS!)

Seminar | September 18 | 1:10 p.m. | B1 Hearst Field Annex

Ken Wong, Arizona

Department of Astronomy

We investigate whether lines of sight containing multiple cluster-scale halos are the best cosmic telescopes for lensing high-redshift (z~10) sources into detectability. For lines of sight of fixed angular size and total mass, we test how the lensing cross section and the number of faint galaxies detected at high redshift change as that mass is distributed among multiple halos, as well as which...   More >

"Retired" Planet Hosts: Not So Massive, Maybe Just Portly After Lunch

Colloquium: Astronomy Colloquia | September 20 | 4 p.m. | 2 LeConte Hall

James Lloyd, Cornell

Department of Astronomy

Studies of the planet abundance as a function of stellar mass have shown a strong increase in the frequency of planet detection around stars more massive than 1.5 Msun, and that such stars are deficit in short period planets. These planet searches have relied on giant stars for a sample of high mass stars, which are hostile to precision Doppler measurements while on the main sequence due to...   More >
