Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium: 35 Years Later

Conference/Symposium: Special Events | September 10 – 12, 2012 every day | 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. | Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Theater

Department of Astronomy

The Astronomy Department is organizing a conference to celebrate the 70th years of our colleagues, Dave Hollenbach, Chris McKee and Frank Shu. Their tremendous contributions to astrophysics are widely known. We have chosen the title in recognition of the year 1977 when two of their landmark papers were published. The conference also marks Chris' retirement at the end of the 2011-2012 academic...   More >

The Density Profiles of Galaxy Clusters Over 3 Decades in Radius

Seminar | September 11 | 1:10 p.m. | B1 Hearst Field Annex

Drew Newman, Caltech

Department of Astronomy

The density profile of halos composed purely of cold dark matter (CDM) is precisely predicted in numerical simulations. Observations of real systems ranging from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters have suggested deviations from this form on small scales. This could reflect the role of baryons in the formation of these systems, or alternatively may inform us about the dark matter particle. I will...   More >

Sanch Borthakur (Johns Hopkins): Tracing the Circumgalactic Medium: The Hidden Gas Reservoir of Galaxies

Seminar: RAL Seminars | September 14 | 12:10-1 p.m. | B5 Hearst Field Annex

Sanch Borthakur, Johns Hopkins

Radio Astronomy Lab

The circum-galactic medium (CGM) of a galaxy is its gas reservoir and holds clues to its past and future evolution. In order to study the CGM, we used bright background QSOs to probe the circumgalactic gas associated with the foreground galaxies.

I will start by presenting some of our recent work aimed at understanding the effects of starburst on the CGM. Our comparison of the properties of...   More >
