The Three Dimensions of Astroethics

Colloquium: Astronomy Colloquia | March 6 | 4:10 p.m. | 1 LeConte Hall

Paul Kalas, UCB

Department of Astronomy

Astronomers encounter a series of ethical dilemmas during their careers that need to be managed correctly if the integrity of the field is to be improved or at least preserved. I will argue that one can approach these dilemmas by considering that they usually span the three ethical dimensions of education, research, and enterprise. I will present a few topics in detail, such as authorship and intellectual property, and also show how ethics can be included in a science curriculum.
