The Etruscans and the Grand Tour

Lecture: Other UCB Archaeology | November 15 | 7:30 p.m. | 370 Dwinelle Hall

Lisa Pieraccini, University of California, Berkeley

Archaeological Institute of America, San Francisco Society

An examination of the relationship of English travelers of the 18th century 'Grand Tour' on the great interest in the 'mysteries' of the Etruscans. Their writings offered the first canon of Etruscan monuments and sites to visit in English while also recording objects and tombs, some of which are now lost. The Grand Tour of Etruria was a rite of passage into what was then the obscure world of the Etruscans.
