Jun Kamata: Photographs of Native American Communities

Displayed are 25 black and white photographs taken by Jun Kamata, Associate Professor at ASIA University in Tokyo. Besides numerous articles about American and Japanese social issues, he has published eight books and two photography books in Japan. He holds a B.A. in Native American Studies from UC Berkeley, an M.A. in American Indian Studies, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from UCLA.

"Ugo Rondinone: the world just makes me laugh" incorporates imagery and themes from popular culture as well as drawing inspiration from historical art movements such as Romanticism and Surrealism. Seemingly lighthearted motifs including rainbows, clowns, and clown shoes take on a melancholy tone in this riveting and psychologically intense installation.

The tiny pieces of paper that comprise Irwin Kremen’s visually stunning abstract collages were taken from advertisements found on the walls of cities such as Paris, Brussels, Florence, Rome, and New York. Using only these found materials, Kremen constructs his works using fine hinges made of Japanese paper so as to preserve the sense of edge and depth among the various paper fragments.
