Youth Support Program Meeting: Be a mentor!

Meeting | September 9, 2009 – May 5, 2010 every Wednesday with exceptions | 5-6 p.m. | 210 Wheeler Hall

Cal Corps Public Service Center

The Youth Support Program pairs UC Berkeley mentors with Willard Middle School students to provide a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and behaviorally. We provide both academic and mentoring support through safe and fun activities that help students develop cultural sensitivity, improve their leadership skills and self-esteem, and learn civic responsibility.

Mentors meet with their mentees three hours a week on a flexible schedule. This may include coming by the school for lunch, attending the mentee's classes, going to sports games or theater events (free tickets provided) or hanging out after school. In addition, the program holds various parties and awards banquets for the mentors and mentees to hang out together. Once a mentor-mentee match is made, both parties must commit to seeing each other consistently for a minimum of one year.

Our mentors are supported by a full time program staff at the Willard Campus, as well as a Cal volunteer manager and students leaders. We have 15 years of experience working in the Berkeley community.

Our Wednesday meetings are training classes that provide mentors with the support they need to be successful.
