Exploration of Forms: Kuchipudi (Indian Classical Dance) with Sampreeti Malladi

The focus of this workshop will be to introduce some of the constituent elements of Indian dancespecifically, the theatrical genre of Kuchipudi.
The workshop will include:
1. Introduction to elements of Indian Dance (concepts of Rasa, Abhinaya, Nritta, Nritya, and Natya);
2. Introduction to Kuchipudi-theatrical style, characters, and caturvidabhinaya (4 modes of expression);
3. Movement and practice (basic stances, movements of feet, hands, gestures, and expressions);
4. Short movement phrases to mnemonic syllables, and character introduction and/or dialogues and movement to lyrics.
Exploration of Forms is a free, public workshop series. No previous dance experience is necessary. All workshops take place on Sundays, 10am12pm, in Bancroft Dance Studio at UC Berkeley.
About the Instructor:
Sampreeti Malladi is a practitioner of the Indian Classical dance style of Kuchipudi. She has performed extensively in India and abroad at a number of dance festivals. She graduated with a Masters in Performing Arts from the University of Hyderabad and was awarded the Nataraja Ramakrishna Gold Medal for Excellence in Arts. She is a recipient of the Junior Research Fellowship awarded by the Ministry of Culture, India for her work on Yogini Dance iconography and also the Senior Fellowship for pursuing her Ph.D. in dance. Sampreeti is currently a Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Student at the University of California, Berkeley.
