 Department of Music

Dr. I Wayan Dibia, renowned dancer and scholar will discuss ways that the contemporary Balinese performance scene incorporates past traditions while constantly innovating. In Bali the concept of “tradition” is defined by personal innovations in which performers explore their relationships with past practices in terms of the contemporary world. Dr. Dibia will present the latest trends in Balinese performing arts.

Additionally, this presentation will include a lecture-demonstration on the relationship between music, dance, and theater in Bali. Performers include I Wayan Suweca, master drummer and musician, emeritus faculty member from the Balinese Institute of the Arts (ISI Denpasar, Institut Seni Indonesia), and dancers Dr. I Wayan Dibia (PhD from UCLA), and Ni Made Wirathini (MA from UCLA), both also from the ISI faculty, and directors of their own arts organization, Geoks of Singapadu, Bali.
