Performing Arts - Dance | February 8 | 7-9 p.m. | 112 Wurster Hall
When Gertrude Stein wrote in her 1937 book Everybodys Autobiography, There is no there there, she was expressing her regret upon learning that the neighborhood in which she had lived (today known as Bella Vista) was being torn down to make way for an industrial park; over time, the quote has been misconstrued as a derogatory description of Oakland as a whole, and this dismissal has been difficult to overcome.
All in all, Oakland is an urban conundrum, and Dimension Dance Theaters The Town On Notice seeks to explore the community and its many facets at this moment in history in the form of storytelling, dance, music, photography, film and drama. Dimensions Dance Theater is a professional dance company and school that was founded in Oakland in the early 70s.
DDT is widely recognized for its outstanding presentation of both traditional African dances and contemporary choreography drawn from African, Jazz, and Modern dance idioms.
The event is free, open to the public, and sponsored by the Arcus Endowment through the Diversity Platforms Committee of the College of Environmental Design.
