Digital Wedges: Pedagogy, Visualization, and the Cuneiform Script

Cuneiform, the world’s oldest writing system, provides an incredible dataset for the computational analysis of ancient knowledge. This talk consists of two parts. First, I describe the pedagogical potential of a collaborative tool that analyzes cuneiform texts for their most frequently used signs; second, I show how network analysis can aid in visualizing, contextualizing, and disambiguating some of the most difficult technical terms from cuneiform technical scholarship. I will argue that, collectively, these two computational approaches can aid in deepening our understanding of cuneiform cultures as both researchers and instructors.
