The Directors Cut: Challenges and Delights of Oral History Narratives with Syrian Refugee Women: CMES Visiting Scholars Lecture Series
Lecture | March 1 | 12-1:30 p.m. | 340 Stephens Hall
Ozlem Ezer, CMES Visiting Scholar
Lecture by CMES Visiting Scholar Ozlem Ezer (Bogazici University)
This presentation will focus on an oral history (work-in-progress) project that began in Istanbul in February 2016. Dr. Ezer will share stories of failures that occurred during the process, which are commonly experienced in field work, but typically kept private. She will share frustrations, surprises, and disappointments caused by different components of the project, ranging from the participant choice to language, time, and culture-related challenges or assumptions and funding. The dynamics of empathy and professional distancing will be deconstructed through feminist lenses.
Graduate workshop to follow.
