MRED+D Visiting Fellow Lecture: Architect as Developer

Lecture | November 15 | 7-8:30 p.m. | 112 Wurster Hall

 College of Environmental Design

Jonathan Segal, FAIA

Jonathan redefines the role of the traditional architect by eliminating the client and developing, constructing and designing his own work. He has designed some of the most livable and highly regarded residential, live/work, and mixed-use housing in California and has received 24 local, state and national AIA awards recognizing his pioneering design and building methods for providing superior housing at a lower cost than comparable properties.

His talk will pose the question: “What if architects could leverage their training and skills to succeed as developers on their own projects?”

Jonathan’s work is essential study for all architects, planners and developers, according to Chris Calott, faculty director of UC Berkeley’s Master of Real Estate Development and Design (MRED+D) Program:

“The relationship between real estate development and design is not typically well represented in schools of architecture and planning, which is why Jonathan’s work is so critical for us to review. He redefines the role of the traditional architect by engaging the messy business of real estate development, with all of its social, economic and political complexities, to come out the other end with world-class architecture while single-handedly revitalizing whole neighborhoods in downtown San Diego.”

Jonathan is the Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Real Estate Development + Design at the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design.
