Data Science/Health IT, Joan Casey, PhD, UCB, School of Public Health: Precision public health: electronic health records and their promise for epidemiology
Special Event | January 18 | 12-2 p.m. | 150 University Hall
Originally developed for billing purposes and to enhance individual clinical care, electronic health record (EHR) databases have proliferated in the past decade. These secondary data sources provide a low-cost means of accessing rich longitudinal data on diverse populations distributed across space for epidemiologic research. Using her recent study on the association between natural gas fracking and adverse birth outcomes in Pennsylvania, Dr. Casey will discuss the methodological advantages and challenges of using EHR data to examine individual- and placed-based factors that shape health.
