Zubin Mehta gave Saleem Ashkar his first big break when he invited him to join the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1at age 17. Daniel Barenboim followed suit with an invitation to master classes and performances in Chicago. Since then, the formidable Palestinian-Israeli pianist has earned a reputation for balancing "thoughtfulness and virtuosic abandon with playfulness and beauty of sound" (Berliner Morgenpost).
