Few present at the 2005 Carnegie Hall production of György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments, directed by Peter Sellars and performed by Dawn Upshaw and Geoff Nuttall, will forget the searing experience. Set musically to excerpts from Kafka's diaries and letters, this devastating two-character drama astonished audiences and critics alike. The renowned Upshaw portrays an isolated and overwhelmed housewife, singing this complex work "with musical command, poignant vulnerability, and at times unhinged intensity" (New York Times). The production is further distinguished by Geoff Nuttall's intensely dramatic accompaniment and Peter Sellar's wrenching and incisive direction. This special presentation, reuniting the original artists, will be seen in only three venues nationwide.
