Contemporary Russian Cinema Series with Polina Barskova: "The Tsar" (2009) dir. Pavel Lungin

Film - Feature | September 30 | 4 p.m. | Dwinelle Hall, Room 160

Polina Barskova

Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures

In a 16th-century Russia gripped by chaos, Ivan the Terrible believes he is vested with a holy mission and that Judgement Day is approaching. Under Ivan’s reign of absolute power Philip, a great scholar, Ivan's close friend and the superior of a monastery on Solovetsky Islands, dares to oppose the sovereign's mystical tyranny. What follows is a clash between two completely opposite visions of the world, in which morality and justice, God and men, are forced to collide. A film on the grand scale with excellent leading roles by Mamonov and Yankovsky.
