Why the World’s Poorest Can Best Afford and Most Need Innovative, Renewable Energy with Carl Pope: I-House Speaker Series

A veteran environmental leader, Mr. Pope worked for the Sierra Club for more than thirty years. In that time he has served as Political Director, Conservation Director, Executive Director, and Chairman. He stepped down as Chairman in 2012 to become a Senior Strategic Advisor and established Inside Straight Strategies, a consulting firm focused on the intersection between climate, sustainability and economic development.

During his tenure as Executive Director, Sierra Club added 400,000 new members and supporters, growing to approximately 1.2 million today. It most recently led the battle to move the American energy sector Beyond Coal. The Club’s importance extends beyond numbers, though. The Aspen Institute, after surveying Congress and key federal officials, named the Club as the most influential environmental organization in Washington, DC.

Mr. Pope also was a key catalytic leader in the effort to build a “Big Tent” progressive movement, taking the lead in creating partnerships between environmentalists and workers, which culminated in the 2011 merger of two organizations which he had founded, The Blue Green Alliance and the Apollo Alliance, which now together constitute the largest progressive membership coalition in the United States, with organizations representing more than 11 million people participating.
