The Art of War - A New Translation by Michael Nylan

Colloquium | February 3 | 4-6 p.m. | 180 Doe Library

Michael Nylan, Professor of History, UC Berkeley

 Center for Chinese Studies (CCS)

Come celebrate the publication of Michael Nylan's translation of Sunzi's Art of War. Her new translation has been heralded in The New York Times, the SF Chronicle, and a review in the Wall Street Journal still to come.

Michael Nylan intends to use this talk to consider the state of the China field as regards translations of the Classics and masterworks. She is presently editor of the University of Washington "Classics of Chinese Thought" translation series, which is currently publishing the third of the already finished nine scheduled books. She is also the recent translator of Yang Xiong's Exemplary Figures (Fayan) and the Art of War ascribed to late sixth-century BC Sunzi (Master Sun). Each translation she has undertaken (presently four and counting) has presented new challenges, and she hopes to lay out some basic principles of translation, as well as some strategic choices. She will invite comments from the audience, who will doubtless teach her new tricks and alert her to further concerns.
