Getting an Archaeology Article Published

Getting an article published is about more than simply doing the research, writing it up, and sending it off. There are strategies for presenting your work to the journal editor-- and ways to craft your message to them-- that greatly improve your chances of success, strategies that most academics don't know or don't follow. This workshop will serve to demystify what journal editors do, how they make their decisions, and how you can best approach them to maximize your chances of success. I pay special attention to the role of editors, editorial board members, and reviewers, and the importance of doing research on the publications and its gatekeepers before submitting for publication. Identifying your audience and the ways to reach that audience will also be covered. The workshop leader is an experienced publisher of archaeology books and journals and has served as editor of several journals. Participants will be asked to bring information about a current research project from which we will create title, abstract, and keywords for an article and identify a set of journals to which the article can be submitted.
Workshops cost $50 for non-UC attendees. The workshops are free for students, faculty, and staff.
