Triple Bonded Group 14 Compounds: High Reactivity with Small Molecules, Metal- Metal Triple Bond Metathesis with Transition Metal Complexes

The triple bonded compounds ArMMAr (M = Ge, Sn, or Pb; Ar = terphenyl ligands) display structures, reactivity and bonding that are not explained by standard bonding models. Their peculiar bonding is reflected in their spectroscopic properties and in their reaction chemistry toward small molecules particularly H2. Their relationship to the related subvalent hydrides ArMH is central to this reactivity. These chemical studies have led to the first examples of metathesis reactions between metal-metal triply bonded main group and transition metal complexes as well as new classes of group 14 centered radicals. The importance of dispersion force interactions of their ligand substituents for the stability of all complexes will be briefly discussed.
