One of the most interesting composers anywhere today (Chicago Sun-Times), with a distinct voice that is adventurous and winning (Denver Post) López has created works performed by such renowned ensembles as the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Radio France Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestras of Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Argentina. Further engagements include Carnegie Hall; Germanys Darmstadt and Donaueschingen music festivals; Nordic Music Days; the Aspen, Tanglewood, and Grant Park music festivals; and the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Fiesta!, one of his most famous works, has received close to 90 performances worldwide by the major orchestras of Gothenburg, Leipzig, The Hague, Seattle, Colorado, Siberia, and New Zealand, among many others, making it one of the most performed contemporary orchestral works. Bel Canto, a full-length opera commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Chicago as part of the Renée Fleming initiative and based on the bestselling novel of the same name, premiered on December 2015 to wide critical acclaim and was broadcast U.S. nationwide on PBS Great Performances. David Afkham and the National Orchestra of Spain premiered his Symphony No. 1: The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda, on September of 2016 in Madrid, and later took it on tour to Mexico. Mr. López is Composer-in-Residence at the Houston Symphony until the 2019-2020 season, and recently completed Dreamers, a 45-minute oratorio for Ana María Martínez, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, which he wrote in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning Playwright Nilo Cruz. Harmonia Mundi released an album dedicated entirely to his orchestral works in 2015, recorded by Conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. A new album entirely dedicated to his works is scheduled to be released by Yarlung Records in the spring of 2019. López has received numerous prestigious awards, including a TUMI USA Award 2016; Musician of the Year 2015 by Opera Peru and "El Comercio", a 2014 Antara Award in recognition of his outstanding career; the 2013 Prince Prize from the Prince Charitable Trusts; and the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the 2008 Darmstadt Festival of Contemporary Music. A native of Lima, he studied at the citys National Conservatory of Music with Enrique Iturriaga, prior to graduating from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with a Master of Music degree. López completed his Ph.D. in Music at the University of California-Berkeley. He is published by Filarmonika Music Publishing.
