TONIGHT: African Folk Music
Yacouba Sissoko
Yacouba Sissoko was born in Kita, Mali, to a long line of djelis. When he was nine, he began playing the kora and learning centuries-old oral traditions from his grandfather; by the time he was 15, he was performing with prominent African bands, which brought him to the US. Yacouba has toured and recorded not only with well-known African musicians such as Baaba Maal, Sekou “Bambino” Diabate, and Kerfala Kanté, but also with American musicians including Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Lauryn Hill, and Regina Carter. He effortlessly blends Malian traditions with a range of musical styles. In 2017, he released his first solo album SIYA.

Babá Ken Okulolo & the Nigerian Brothers
Nigerian master musician Babá Ken Okulolo and his musical brothers are among the few top contemporary West African musicians with deep roots in African folk and palm-wine music. This is the music they grew up with, music that was played under the moonlight. Together they bring to life their earliest village memories with harmonious voices, melodic guitars, and traditional percussion instruments. This gentle but joyously rhythmic music is a special treat for those who enjoy authentic African sounds.

“In Nigeria, music is created to help people rise above the pain and suffering of daily life, to transcend all evils with the joy of music.” —Baba Ken Okulolo
