 Berkeley Food Institute

From 2015 to 2018, the Berkeley Food Institute collected data on the entities at UC Berkeley who participate in food-related learning and practice on campus—encompassing teaching, student and faculty research, student organizations, administrative decisions and initiatives, and dining services and procurement—with the goal of revealing barriers to the full participation of historically marginalized community members and highlighting opportunities and successes in overcoming such obstacles. Over 150 members of the campus community participated in data collection and visualization to create an interactive “Foodscape Map.” To complement the map, the Berkeley Food Institute developed policy recommendations for different campus entities to improve food and health equity at UC Berkeley, as well as discover ways to be more inclusive of marginalized groups in the food systems culture on campus. At the Foodscape Mapping Project Policy Town Hall we will share findings from the Foodscape map as well as the suggested policy recommendations. This audience-participatory meeting is an intentional space to bring various stakeholders from all levels of campus together in conversation, as well as engage in future action and change on campus.
